It could soon cost you more to buy a pack of cigarettes in the town of Hartford. That's because Hartford city leaders are looking at a tobacco tax.
But, the idea is being met with criticism from some Hartford business owners. During the Hartford council meeting, Councilman Errie Sorrells said he was against such a tax and that it would only hurt local retailers.
Alabama cities without a tobacco tax have less than two months to approve such a measure.
If Gov. Riley's tax reform is approved by voters in September, the local tobacco option will be disallowed.
But, it will be "grandfathered-in" for those communities that already collect it.
