Houston County School Nurse Increase

For nearly a decade, about half of the Houston County schools have gone without a nurse on campus, but that situation could soon change for the better.

The Houston County School System has partnered with Southeast Alabama Medical Center to provide five nurses in the county's nine schools.

But this year the state's allocation to the school nurse program has dramatically increased, giving potential to hire four more school nurses.

"Because of the make up of our schools in our system, there are some schools that are left out of the services of the school nurse, and we had hoped that our increased funding from 44,000 to 220,000, and then with help from the hospital to hopefully provide a nurse in every school," said Superintendent Tim Pitchford of Houston County Schools.

The school system and hospital are still in negotiations over whether to continue the partnership, which would allow the expansion of the school nurse program.
