Houston County residents could pay higher court fees in the future.

The county commission approved legislation submitted by district attorney Doug Valeska to increase fees by $20.

The additional revenue would break down to $10 for the jail, $1 for the Circuit Court Clerk and $9 for the District Attorney's Office.

The measure must be presented to the Alabama state legislature for approval.

Commissioners are hoping the extra revenue will help fill the gap in the county's budget.

If approved by the state, the fees could take affect as early as September 2009.
