Alabama's nursing home industry may have been given a big break by the Senate Monday when they passed a bill limiting jury money awards to victims who have been wronged by care providers.
Nursing home employees rallied on the capitol grounds to get lawmakers to pass a compromised version of a bill that would cap wrongful death case awards at $1.5 million.
Injury damages would be leveled off at $550,000.
They involve non-economic damages for nursing home caregivers.
The caps laid out in the Senate's bill could be expanded in severe cases, especially when nursing homes ignore doctor's orders that result in a patient's death.
Lawmakers will take action on the bill during the next regular session.
