Florida Criminal Registry

If you're a Florida resident, you can now go online and see if your new neighborhood down the street has a criminal past.

Under a law that went into effect the beginning of the year, career criminals must register with the sheriff's department or Florida Department of Law Enforcement Office in the area in which they now live.

Law enforcement officers say the registry is not intended as additional punishment for convicted criminals, but a way to improve public safety.

So far, more than 400 career offenders have been entered into the registry.

Their names and the areas where they live are now available by logging on to the Federal Department of Law Enforcement Web Site at www.fdle.stat.fl.us
