ATTALLA, Ala. (AP) - A convicted sex offender shot and killed two people and then apparently killed himself during a hostage situation that started Monday and ended this morning in rural Etowah County.
Officials with the Etowah County Sheriff's Department identified
the gunman as Johnny Ray Holderfield, a convicted sex offender
registered in Marshall County.
The names of the other victims, believed to be a man and a woman, are being withheld until their next-of-kin is notified.
Authorities said Holderfield shot and killed the female victim at a trailer north of Attalla and then waited for three children to get off the school bus.
Deputies said Holderfield told the children the woman had gone to the store and they were to stay with him. He then took the children, a 15-year-old and two 14-year-olds, to a travel trailer behind the home, where he bound them.
When the male victim arrived home from work, Holderfield reportedly shot and killed him.
Deputies said the 15-year-old freed himself and went to the home of a relative, who called the sheriff's department at about 5:30 am.
When deputies arrived on the scene, Holderfield killed himself as law enforcement officers arrived at the scene.
