West Point Stevens

bankruptcy

One of the nation's largest makers of sheets, pillowcases and towels has filed for bankruptcy protection. But, company officials say employees in the Tri-State area should not be affected.

West Point Stevens has been struggling with high debt, a slumping economy and competition from low-cost rivals.

The plant includes three of the most famous textile makers of the past, JP Stevens & Company, Pepperell Manufacturing and West Point Manufacturing.

In our area, a West Point plant is located in Abbeville and another in Chipley, Florida.

A spokesperson says at this time, no layoffs or cuts in pay and benefits are planned for the 15,000 employee company or any of its branches.
