An area woman has been arrested and charged with forgery.
Dothan police arrested 36-year-old Penelope Leigh Gibson of Midland City and charged her with six counts of second degree possession of a forged instrument.
Gibson was reportedly attempting to pass a check at a local grocery store when the cashier noticed the check had been tampered with.
The manager was notified by the cashier and police were called to the scene.
Gibson was taken to the Houston county jail; bond is $75,000.
Further investigation has revealed this check was one of several personal checks stolen from mailboxes.
Dothan police warn anyone who uses a mailbox outside their homes to be mindful that your mail can be stolen.
It's suggested if you are sending payments through the mail to use your local post office.
