ATLANTA (AP) - Former President Jimmy Carter plans to meet with
Syrian President Bashar Assad and other officials to discuss prospects for peace in the Middle East during visits to Lebanon and
Syria next week.

The Carter Center said Friday that Carter will lead a
pre-electoral assessment mission in Lebanon, where the Center is
considering observing parliamentary elections scheduled for the

Carter also will address students, faculty, and invited guests
at the American University of Beirut on Dec. 12.

He will speak on "30 years after Camp David: A memo to the Arab World, Israel and the Quartet."
