Long Anticipated Bridge Project Complete

A long-anticipated transportation project is completed in the Wiregrass.

Following more than six-months of construction, the new bridge over Hurricane Creek opened to traffic. No longer will motorists traveling between Slocomb and Hartford have to drive a long and confusing detour route.

Merchants believe the detour kept many people from shopping in either town.

"We are glad that the bridge is completed. It makes it easier on just about everyone," said Kiesha Mills with Dalton Pharmacy.

Hartford Interim Police Chief Mark Pawlina says response time will be improved a great deal; however he does worry about speeders along Highway 52.

"It’s been a longer trip for responders heading east from Hartford, and this completion should improve our times."

State department of transportation officials say the new Hurricane Creek Bridge is much wider and less dangerous than the 60-year-old structure it replaced.
