Alabama Grocery Sales Tax
State Democratic Caucus has placed the removal of Alabama’s sales tax on groceries.

The Alabama Democratic Caucus held joint news conferences in both Birmingham and Enterprise.
Alabama and Mississippi are the only two states in the country that fully taxes groceries. That includes essential items like milk, bread, and baby food.
Last year, a bill to eliminate the grocery tax, failed by one vote in the Alabama senate. In an Enterprise news conference, state representatives Terry Spicer and Locy Baker pledged their support to kill the tax in next year's legislative session.
“Today, our citizens are paying a four percent tax and essentially paying around $300 million, that we would eliminate,” says, Rep. Terry Spicer, D., Elba.
"And save Alabamians from going to bordering states to avoid our sales tax and we could save tax," says Rep. Locy Baker, D., Abbeville.
Both lawmakers say taxing groceries affects all Alabamians, but is particularly tough on the poor.
