If you want to hold a yard sale in Dothan, you now have to register with the city and get a permit.
City commissioners say there have been too many complaints from homeowners.
Some people say their neighbors are making a full-time job out of hosting yard sales and it's disruptive to the neighborhood.
Mayor Pat Thomas says although the law will be enforced, the city is not intending for it to impede on anyone's freedom.
"It is to make the people who are having continuous yard sales out of their homes--it is to shut them down and let their neighbors enjoy their homes. Again, that is our only aim here," said Mayor Thomas.
People who host weekly yard sales or more than three-per year without obtaining a permit are more likely to face harsher penalties.
This new law will go into effect starting September 1st.
