Oh the sound.

For Betty Mathews this bell is more than just a way to help people, it's a reminder of some troubles she overcame.

"They helped me out in the flood in Daleville in 1990. This is just my way to help others," says Mathews

The Wiregrass Salvation Army kicked off their annual Red Kettle Campaign in hopes of raising over 173-thousand dollars this holiday season.

"The Salvation Army has always thrived when the economy has gone lower because that's when everyone pulls together and they realize they need to help each other out," says Lt. Jonathan Howell, Commanding Officer of the Wiregrass Salvation Army.

18 Dothan stores have the bell ringers outside its doors.

Not all of them are your *typical* ringers.

"For people who are sad and comes up and talks to me then leave with a smile, that means more to me than anything," says Betty J. Hodges.

The kettle campaign will run through December 24th.
