Local and state investigators are looking into the alleged theft of nearly $28,000 from the Coffee County Solid Waste Department.
Pike-Coffee County District Attorney Gary McAliley says his office is investigating the missing money.
The Alabama Department of public examiners found the discrepancy during a routine audit.
Mcaliley says one of three people working in the solid waste department refused to answer questions, by pleading the Fifth Amendment.
County officials have refused to give her name, but she has since been fired.
Cash and checks were reportedly taken from those coming in to pay monthly household trash pick-up service.
Mcaliley plans to present the case to a grand jury in October to get an indictment against the former employee.
