The Pike County sheriff's department is taking on a couple more duties. The department will now handle all solid waste and animal control issues.
The job was temporarily under the department's authority before a vote by the county commission.
The sheriff's department will permanently handle enforcement for illegal dumping and animal control.
“In the sheriff department, we got the initial call 99 percent of the time. When there is an illegal dump, or if someone is throwing something out on the right of way, dog problems or a stray animal is put on a dirt road,” said Russell Thomas of Pike County Sheriff
The sheriff told News 4 they have already caught more than 150 stray dogs and worked many illegal dump sites.
