The Dothan Fire Department responded to a house fire on Prevatt Road at about 6:45 p.m. Monday.

When firefighters arrived on the scene, heavy smoke and flames were visible from outside the home.

An elderly woman was inside the home at the start of the fire and was able to get out safely.

She called 911 and informed authorities there was an elderly, disabled man trapped inside the home.

She tried to get him out of the burning house, but was unable to. Fire crews arrived within four minutes of the 911 call and brought the fire under control shortly thereafter.

On the scene Captain Chris Etheredge of the Dothan Fire Department said:

"Within a matter of 2-3 minutes our crews were able to knock down the fire, and remove the elderly male from the home. Unfortunately, he was overcome in the fire, and this has been deemed a fatality. The Dothan Fire Department and Fire Marshal's Office are en route to investigate the cause of the accident."

Houston County Coroner Robert Byrd says the man has been identified as 70 year-old Myron McWilliams.

Authorities say this is the first fatal fire in the City of Dothan in 2008.

They say it has been more than 5 years since someone inside the city limits has died in a fire.

The woman who survived was transported to a local hospital for minor smoke inhalation.
