Assault Weapons Ban

President Bush is supporting a major weapons ban, putting him at odds with the National Rifle Association.

A Bush spokesman says the president backs a permanent ban on assault weapons and large ammunition clips.

That's not what the NRA wants to hear. The gun lobby is a major supporter of Bush and other Republicans. It opposes the assault weapons ban legislation.

The White House admits Bush is waiting to see a report on the current weapons ban, but says he believes the assault ban is reasonable.

Even so, it's not clear the president will ever get to sign the ban into law. A senior adviser says the bill won't clear Congress.
