The Dothan Police Department is upgrading its bulletproof vests to give officers an additional bit of protection.
Every year, Dothan police officers receive new vests because of the wear and tear that comes with their daily activities.
This year, the city is buying $48,000 worth of police vests but they're receiving some help with the cost.
Dothan Police Chief John Powell said, “It adds safety to them to them when their out on patrol, when their answering calls and it’s certainly a benefit that there's a match in federal grant funds...to replace that body armor because it can be pretty expensive.”
The United States Department of Justice is providing half of the money to purchase the vests.
