Japan Agrees to Lift US Beef Ban

The Japanese Agriculture Department has given the okay to resume the importation of American beef.

It had been barred following a case of mad cow disease earlier this year in north Alabama. Coffee County is one of the largest statewide cattle producers.

County Extension Agent Stan Windham says word that the embargo has been lifted could not have come at a better time for area cattlemen. Especially with the ongoing drought, and the higher hay costs.

"Good for the U.S economy when everything is flourishing. Believe it'll be good especially when you get the export markets solidifying things considerably," said Windham.

Windham says Japan was the leading importer of U.S beef before the embargo.

He hopes that Japan’s decision will increase beef demand across Asia.
