Pike County officials expect an Opp man to survive after being shot in the back of the head.
Nineteen-year-old Jeffrey Smith allegedly pulled away from a gas station Sunday without paying for gas. That's when the store owner, 59-year-old John Blair of Troy, reportedly pulled out a gun and shot smith in the back of the head.
Pike Co. Sheriff Dept. Capt. Doug Wheeler said, “Jeffery Smith was taken to troy hospital then to Montgomery to have surgery.”
At first authorities weren't sure if Smith would live or not but Tuesday his condition was upgraded to stable. That means Blair is now only facing first degree assault charges.
Longtime store customers are shocked by what happened and the incident was something out of the ordinary
Mark Boutwell sits on his front porch often which is right across the road from Hillmart. He says the neighborhood and the store has a reputation of being a quiet place where everybody knows everybody.
“I was surprised he's never very aggressive but I guess he had a bad day,” said Boutwell.
The owner's daughter refused to comment. Blair was arrested and released on $50,000 bond.
