Carrying cell phones on school grounds will be allowed beginning next year, for all Dothan city schools.
Earlier Monday night, Dothan City School Board members voted to adopt a new cell phone policy as part of next years student code of conduct. Under the new policy, students will be allowed to carry cell phones, but they have to be off while class is in session.
School officials say this policy is fair for both students and parents.
School Board Chairman Steve Stokes told News 4 that the policy will allow parents and students to communicate as long as they don't disrupt classes.
Now school officials say that students who violate the new policy will have their cell phones confiscated after their first offense and if they violate the rule a second time, the principal of the school will decide whether to confiscate the phone, or also give a student an in school suspension.
