A recent high-speed chase in downtown Dothan has sparked interest around the Wiregrass about how police handle those cases.
Dothan Police Chief John White says high-speed chases happen more often than people realize. The current procedure for chases is strictly outlined for the Dothan Police Department.
Officers are required to have constant contact with dispatchers. They must give as many details as possible about the vehicle they're chasing and the surrounding traffic conditions.
The majority of chases don't end in fatalities. More commonly, they end with a pursuit on foot.
Chief White points out that eluding police goes from being a misdemeanor to a felony at some point in a pursuit. Those guidelines are currently being redefined.
