Census

New census data shows that Alabama has grown more slowly than the rest of the nation over the last two years.

Alabama's population grew by just 0.8 percent from July 1, 2000 to July 1, 2002, while the nation grew by 2.2 percent over that period. That's according to the figures released last week.

State economists say the state's slow growth rate likely is due to poor economic conditions.
