Florala residents can now walk down Fifth Avenue without dodging holes and tripping over parts of broken sidewalks.
Mayor Danny Franklin says phase one of the nearly $100,000 project is nearing an end, and the city is actively seeking funds for phase two. The money is coming from an Alabama Department Of Transportation enhancement grant.
The new pavement replaces a sidewalk laid down around the turn of the 20th century, some 100 years ago. For one restaurant owner, she has already seen an increase in pedestrian traffic into her business.
City officials hope the sidewalk restoration project can be the cornerstone to downtown revitalization in Florala.
