Local tomato farmers are picking their crop and taking it to market just in time for the annual Slocomb Tomato Festival.
The festival is a longstanding tradition for the city, and residents are hoping for a large turnout.
The festival is a big celebration for the city of Slocomb. This year they are planning several events including many activates for the kids. But of course, the main focuses of the festival are the famous Slocomb tomatoes.
The 18th Annual Slocomb Tomato Festival kicks off Saturday morning. The festival features fun for the whole family and Slocomb officials say it provides a gathering place for a close-knit community.
Slocomb Mayor Vickie Moore said, "It's important for the community to come together. One thing America is losing is a sense of family and having fun."
The festival features a variety of entertainment options including country music singer Shane Owens, a Ferris wheel, and inflatable games. This year, organizers of the event wanted to change the focus of the festival.
"We're focusing on the kids this time. We'll have two kid carnivals, and water slip and slides," said Rhonda Barry, Festival Chairman.
A lot of people make their way out to the festival for the food, and there will be lots of it to choose from, from Tomato sandwiches to funnel cakes, but one tasty treat always leaves consumers wanting more.
"The fried green tomatoes we do a big fundraiser. Everyone likes to come out and get the fried green tomatoes."
Slocomb prides itself on being the tomato capital of the south, and most residents are ready to defend their title.
"We have the best tomatoes in the United States because of the soil, and we have best, and there is just no denying it," Janet Tew, Dir. of East Geneva Co. Sr. Citizen's Center.
Many of the people in Slocomb said the tomato alone should be enough to bring everyone out to the festival, but for those who aren't tomato lovers; there is also lots of musical entertainment and water activates in case the weather gets too hot.
Festival gates open at 11 in the morning and tickets are $8 a person. Children 10 and under are free.
