Supporters of two education amendments are suing to block a new state law that could hurt their efforts.
One proposal would require the state to set up voluntary pre-Kindergarten programs. The other would limit class sizes in public schools. Backers of both ideas don't like a new state law, which would require the state budget impact of the proposals to be spelled out on the ballot.
Gov. Jeb Bush has backed the financial disclosure idea. But critics say the new law is unconstitutional and arbitrary, since it changes the rules after the petition drives were under way.
Florida voters have given wide approval to a bullet train amendment that critics say would not have passed if the price tag was attached. They're afraid the state budget would be hamstrung by the new education amendments.
Those pushing the lawsuit say there's no price tag attached to amendments proposed by the legislature. They say it’s prejudicial for some ballot initiatives to have financial statements while others do not.
