As the search continues for nine people reported missing off the Florida coast, the U.S Coast Guard is investigating whether the distress call might have been a hoax.
Officials have been searching the waters three miles off the Boynton Beach inlet since Sunday night when the call came in.
A man said their powerboat, called Blue Sheep, was taking on water and sinking. He also said all nine on board were in life jackets. Officials say some elements “just don't add up.” Also, the voice on the tape doesn't sound like someone particularly stressed.
They say there is no record of a boat named Blue Sheep in Florida or elsewhere.
Meanwhile, a 10-foot portion of a boat was found on a beach several miles from where the vessel reportedly sank. However, officials aren't sure if it came from the vessel mentioned in the distress call.
