Unexpectedly high levels of groundwater contamination have been found in a monitoring well near the Anniston Army Depot and a source of Anniston's drinking water.
The contamination hasn't penetrated the drinking water at Coldwater Spring or shown up in 70 residential wells tested for trichloroethylene (TCE), according to tests by the Army and the state Department of Environmental Management.
TCE, which is linked to kidney and liver damage, was found in a 205-foot monitoring well.
The Army said it would take several actions to track and prevent TCE from disrupting residential water service.
TCE is a toxic chemical that leaked for decades from the Anniston Army Depot's industrial operation and resulted in an ongoing environmental investigation that began 13 years ago.
The Army continues to use TCE as an industrial degreaser at the depot, while at the same time spending millions of dollars to treat TCE-contamination.
