Blizzard conditions have descended on the midsection of the country again.

The National Weather Service has issued blizzard warnings and watches in Kansas and Oklahoma through the night as the storm tracks north and east across West Texas toward Oklahoma, Kansas and Missouri.

Airports in the Texas Panhandle are closed and National Guard units are mobilizing to assist stranded motorists as the storm blankets the region with a foot of snow in some places. State troopers have been unable to respond to calls for assistance as roads are impassable.

Heavy snow is piling up quickly in western Oklahoma and, combined with high winds, visibility is near zero. Oklahoma State Police are urging people not to travel through the blizzard. Even snowplows were getting stuck in snow in the Panhandle and the northwestern corner of Oklahoma.

Not all of the region's temperatures are below freezing, though, and eastern Texas, Arkansas and Louisiana are being pelted by heavy rain and thunderstorms.
