Alabama Oysters

Alabama fishermen are protesting California's Summer ban on raw oysters harvested from the Gulf of Mexico.

California health officials say a certain bacteria is far more common in gulf oysters.

But, Alabama fishermen say its just part of a ploy by East and West Coast competitors to shut gulf oysters out of national markets.

One California official says 75 cases of infection and 48 deaths have been traced directly to gulf oysters since 1983.

The emergency order prevents California retailers, distributors and wholesalers from accepting raw gulf oysters from April through October.
