With dry weather conditions, the Wiregrass area is also more susceptible to wildfires. Officials say residents should use caution when burning during the summer months.
Since May first, the Dothan fire department has reported ten wildfires. Many of them were started by hot charcoal or cigarette butts.
Dothan Fire Dept. Capt. Chris Etheridge said, “This dry weather is absolutely no joke, it breeds for the opportunity for fast growing fires should they get started and the windy time of year helps to spread those rapidly.”
Fire officials say after you grill, always allow enough time for the hot charcoal to cool before discarding them.
They also advise you not to throw lit cigarette butts out of car windows and use sufficient care when burning waste and leaves.
