Panhandle Standoff

A SWAT team stormed a mobile home to end an eight-hour standoff with an armed suspect, who was found hiding beneath the trailer after dropping through a trap door without his weapon.

Bay County sheriff's spokeswoman Ruth Sasser said Sonny Eugene Jones, wanted in Chilton County, Alabama, on charges of marijuana trafficking and possession of drug paraphernalia, then gave up without a fight shortly after 8 p.m. Thursday night.

Jones also was charged with resisting arrest and illegal possession of a firearm by a felon in this Florida Panhandle community near Panama City Beach. He is at the Bay County Jail in Panama City pending a first court appearance.

Deputies said they found Jones apparently trying to sell a gun to another man in his front yard when they arrived to serve the Alabama arrest warrant. He then ran into the trailer and threatened to shoot anyone who came after him. Deputies arrested the other man and seized the gun.
