If a hurricane heads for the coast this season officials want evacuation to be a smoother process.
The Alabama department of transportation has installed cameras along part of interstate 65 to monitor evacuation traffic from the coast.
The cameras are being placed in six heavy congestion points between the Tensaw River and Montgomery.
State officials received criticism for not reversing the interstate lanes earlier during Hurricane Dennis last July.
Some evacuees complained of traffic snarls.
The cameras will transmit video directly to the dot traffic control center. Dot officials plan to put in additional cameras.
