Georgia Counties

The state of Georgia has more counties than any other state in the nation except Texas.

But a Georgia lawmaker wants to cut down on the number of counties and hopefully save taxpayer money by cutting down on government services.

Representative Ron Sailor has proposed a bill that would offer counties grants to study merger plans.

Voters in each county would have to approve before consolidation would go into effect.

Small counties shoulder the burden of paying for a sheriff, probate judge, court clerk and all the other staffing required by a county government.

Sailor says that creates a drain on taxpayers. But rural counties don't see it that way.

Representative Bob Hanner says pride is why people live in rural Georgia and the government should not take that away by consolidating counties.
