A Houston County man accused of sexually assaulting and trying to kill a six-year-old girl goes on trial Monday in Dothan.
Twenty-three-year-old Freeshone McLeod of Gordon is charged with rape and attempted murder.
The crime was committed in October of 2001. Investigators say McLeod was a friend of the victim's family.
McLeod allegedly left the girl's home with her one afternoon, but returned without her.
The child was later found in some brush near the residence.
She had been severely beaten and investigators later recovered a bloody "wok lid" from McLeod's room.
The suspect is being held in the Houston County Jail less than $100,000 bond.
