Rescue teams from Henry and Houston Counties recovered the bodies of two people who drowned in a pond while on a fishing trip.
It was a tragic scene, a family stricken with horror after learning that two of their loved ones drowned.
One of the victims was a teen and the other was an elderly man.
A mother unable to contain her grief after finding out that her 15-year-old son drowned while fishing in a lake right outside Newville.
"They were fishing in this little pond here, and it was a little canoe there," said Sheriff Lawton Armstrong
Authority’s say the two inside the canoe were the 15-year-old boy and his step-grandfather, who authorities say was in his late 50's early 60's.
They say when the boy's "stepfather" tried to get in the canoe, to join them, it tipped over.
The stepfather was able to get out unharmed. However, the boy and his step-grandfather, who did not know how to swim, were not so fortunate.
"When we arrived we found two individuals that were submerged under water and a third person that was outside," said Sheriff Armstrong.
About 10 different fire, police, and rescue teams responded to the scene of the accident; including a dive unit from Dothan that was called out to recover the body of one of the victims.
At this time, officials do not know if the two victims died from their inability to swim, or if any of them sustained an injury that led him to drown.
The exact cause of death will be determined after both autopsy reports are released. The third man involved in the accident did not sustain any injuries.
Authorities say they will not release the names of the victims until their next of kin are notified.
