Some Students Working Without Textbooks

Dothan city schools have been back in session almost a month now and some students still do not have textbooks. School officials say they ordered the books to have them in on time but they haven't arrived.

Some of these textbooks are on back-order. Officials say they should be in any day now, but want to assure parents their children's education is not suffering because of the delay.

Northview High School Principal Ron Snell said, "At this point while there's been reorders and lots of work done to this point many of those books have not arrived."

Snell is referring to the hundreds of textbooks that have yet to show up at either Northview or Dothan high. While teachers are working around the problem, it is creating some difficulties.

Snell said, "Homework assignments and studying outside of class has been impeded, but we've worked around it."

The issue arose with the 2008-2009's transition from block scheduling to semesters.

Snell said, "Now all students in ss all year, so rather than if you have 3 freshmen who were split, now they are all taking it at the same time so it doubles the number of books you need."

The textbook order was placed on April 28 but the textbook vendor says they have back orders on many of the books and will deliver them as soon as possible. Until then, teachers are working to keep students from falling behind.

Snell said, "There’s accommodations made within each classroom but any number of things from running off worksheets but different teachers handle it differently depending on the class."

School officials are expecting the textbooks to arrive within the next two weeks.

School officials did place these textbook orders in plenty of time. The vendor has been reliable in the past, but says they just weren't expecting such large orders of books in Spanish or History.

Northview and Dothan high schools spend about 300-thousand dollars a year... on textbooks.
