Sybers New Trial

A former Bay County medical examiner accused of murdering his first wife is set to have a new trial June 16th.

Dr. William Sybers is free on $300,000 bond now that an appeals court reversed his first-degree murder conviction.

Sybers is accused of killing his first wife, Kay, with an injection of a paralyzing drug in 1991 at their Panama City Beach home.

At the time, he was the district medical examiner. But he refused to order an autopsy until after the body was sent to a funeral home and embalmed.

The autopsy failed to disclose a cause of death, but years later, new testing procedures allegedly turned up evidence of the drug.

Sybers was given a life prison term. But, a state appeals court ordered a new trial because the laboratory procedures had not been verified by an outside expert.
