As residents in the Wiregrass prepare for what Tropical Storm Fay may bring, schools around the area are doing just the same.

A number of schools in Houston County and surrounding areas sent their students home early on Friday.

School was cut short for students Friday afternoon.

As Tropical Storm Fay draws closer to the Wiregrass, school officials are taking extra precautions.

Houston Co. Schools Superintendent Tim Pitchford said, "With heavy rains comes muddy roads; we saw what happened at Dale County and we don’t have to have a situation like that."

Pitchford has been keeping a close eye on Fay.

He says he would rather be cautious before the storm hits our area.

"About a year and a half ago, two years, I made the mistake of waiting too late on whether you should, and we ended up having buses deliver or take children home with it storming, roads were flooding, power lines were down and I will never make that mistake again," Pitchford said.

Even if Tropical Storm Fay turns out to be a few inches of rain, officials say they would rather be safe than sorry.

Dothan High School Principal Andrew Sewell said, "Nobody has a crystal ball, but it’s better to be safe than sorry, especially [when] our children are involved; we want to make sure we have the best choice, period."

Sewell says students and staff have been cooperating with the early release. "Our kids have been great,” he added. “Going around to all the classes and letting them know what all the precautionary measures are for how it’s going to effect them and it’s for their safety. It's not a gamble to us; we have to make sure our children are safe."

There is no word yet on if schools will be canceled on Monday.
