PANAMA CITY BEACH, Fla. (August 21, 2008) The news from Panama City Beach is always good. Neither snow nor rain nor heat nor gloom of night has ever stayed us from our goal of welcoming the world to the our shores.
Sometimes, however, we have to meet our guests with an umbrella and just the sunshine of our smile. Tropical storm Fay has made this one of those occasions.
The uncertainties of the moment and the potential danger that rough seas pose to our participants have give us every reason to act cautiously in evaluating Tournament activities scheduled for this weekend.
We want to host a spectacular tournament and to celebrate the occasion with a great festival. We did not, however, invite tropical storm Fay to our table and having her as an uninvited guest is not something we can safely deal with.
Given the circumstances we face, the Grand Lagoon National organizing committee has decided to continue festival activities for as long as weather permits and to reschedule fishing in all eight divisions. Fishing will now occur over the Labor Day weekend on August 30 and 31.
Tonight’s festivities will go on as planned; the Miss Grand Lagoon Contest, the fireworks, the performances of Shawn Rader and Daryle Singletary. Weather permitting, Billy Currington will shine from our main stage tomorrow night.
Unfortunately, the real stars of the Grand Lagoon National will have to wait on the passage of Fay before they make their appearance.
But they will attend, every last one of them from big one with bills and swords, to small ones with bright colored scales. It will just take them a week longer to get here.
Friday, August 22 and Saturday, August 23 - All festival events as scheduled. We will continue to monitor weather conditions.
Sunday, August 24 - ALL FESTIVAL EVENTS HAVE BEEN CANCELED. (Sunday’s event centered on weigh-in and award ceremonies.)
