More and more, colleges are coming to the students. Troy University is one of the latest schools to open a campus here in our area. Now another local college is welcoming Troy to the neighborhood.
As colleges around the country get ready for the fall semester, two schools in our area, are coming together. Chipola College VP of Baccalaureate Programs Kitty Myers says it's to solve a major problem in accessing higher education.
"Student who graduated from Chipola, well over a half of them never could go off to school to get their bachelors degrees, so at that point we made partnerships with two or three universities to offer bachelors degrees."
Those partnerships began almost 10 years ago and since then one of them have flourished. Troy University Local Representative Mandy Suggs says a ribbon cutting ceremony sealed the deal, launching the official site of Troy University in Marianna.
"The partnership with Chipola is the very first of its kind for Troy University."
A move that will allow many in the area to take class they couldn't before.
"We offer degrees in counseling in psychology which is a masters degree, we also offer several degrees on line with several different programs," Suggs.
Today's celebrations is more than just a partnership, officials say it's about the students because now they will be able to have a seamless transition between an associates, bachelors, or even a doctorate degree.
"We'll now have student who will be getting their bachelors degrees from Chipola, and right here on campus we'll have opportunities for them to continue and get there doctorate degree," Myers.
Myers also says the opportunity will allow many who already have full time jobs to continue their education in almost any area they want either by attending Troy classes on Chipola's campus or through Troy's online programs.
"So it's another path or an expansion for the education path for the people in this area right here on our campus."
Troy and Chipola fall registration runs from August 18 through the 20.
