Montgomery Priest Resigns

Priest

A longtime Alabama priest has left the priesthood after admitting to at least three cases of sexually abusing children, charges that church officials said they knew about for years.

The pastor of Saint Peter's Catholic Church in downtown Montgomery, Reverend J. Alex Sherlock, resigned Feb. 28 telling church staff and members he was ill.

But, Archbishop Oscar H. Lipscomb of the Mobile Diocese revealed the real reason to parishioners Sunday. Lipscomb said Sherlock had admitted to sexually abusing minors some time ago. And he said a fourth allegation against Sherlock surfaced last week.

It is believed the three incidents of sexual abuse that Sherlock admitted to happened while he was in Mobile.

Lipscomb said he does not know of any abuse that occurred while Sherlock was in Montgomery.
