According to the Florida Department of Transportation, highway construction is one of the most dangerous jobs in America.
Florida's DOT and law enforcement officials are urging motorists to be careful. It is National Work Zone Awareness Week.
From April 2 through the 8, Florida motorists will be encouraged to stay alert at construction zones.
The week will be enforced by using officers who will be posted near the sites until the projects are complete.
Since 2004, there've been nearly 370 crashes near highway work zones and 130 fatalities.
“We want them to be alert and realize there are people working in the work zones, and the people are here to improve the highways. They don't have time to look out for motorists, so we're having this week so motorists can look out for them,” said Tommie Speights of the Florida Department of Transportation.
Florida Highway Patrol officers are also conducting what they're calling "Operation Hard-Hat."
Troopers will be going undercover as construction workers and handing out tickets to speeding motorists.
