April is Child Abuse Awareness Month and Friday state and local officials gather to show their support.
The event is held to raise awareness about the high occurrence of child abuse in this area, and throughout the state.
Recently many new laws have been passed to increase penalties for sex-related crimes, one of which now requires minimum mandatory sentencing for child sex offenders.
Executive Director of the Child Advocacy Center Sherrel Walker said, "Everyday a child is abused in our area and increased in the city and this city doesn't understand.”
The Alabama Child Advocacy is in need of both volunteers and financial contributions.
