Governor Bob Riley joined a US delegation on a visit to troops in Iraq.
During the Defense Department trip, Riley plans to visit Alabama National Guard troops and meet with US military commanders for briefings on progress of the war.
Riley is traveling with Arizona Senator John McCain and two other Republican governors, Tim Pawlenty of Minnesota and Jon Huntsman Junior of Utah.
At the Pentagon's request, details of the governor's travel schedule were not released.
About 600 Alabama National Guard soldiers are in and around Iraq, and about 600 are scheduled to start training in June for missions there.
