Some Wiregrass area students are spending part of their spring break learning about careers in healthcare.
Flowers Hospital is hosting its annual "Spring into Healthcare" event.
The hospital invites all area high school juniors and seniors interested in healthcare to shadow different professionals.
This year's event attracted more than 60 local students who plan to pursue healthcare related fields and wanted to get a jump start on their futures.
“They gain insight, they want to know more they have an opportunity to see what specific jobs are like and what they may be interested in,” said Nursing Services Associate Director, Lori Lewin.
The U.S Bureau of Labor statistics estimates that more than one million new and replacement nurses will be needed by 2012.
The health resources and services administration projects that 44 states plus the District of Columbia will suffer from a shortage of registered nurses by 2020.
