Riley Signs Pay Raise Bill for State Troopers

MONTGOMERY, Ala. There are sure to be some smiling Alabama state troopers.

Tuesday afternoon Gov. Bob Riley will sign legislation to give troopers a pay raise that will go into effect June first.

The legislation, approved March second, gives troopers and corporals a ten percent pay hike. It will boost the pay of sergeants and lieutenants by seven point five percent and captains and higher ranks by five percent.

The House sponsor, Representative John Knight of Montgomery, said the pay increase is needed to bring troopers' pay closer to what law enforcement officers are making in other states. Knight also said troopers pay is below what officers receive in some cities and counties in Alabama
