News that South Korean automaker KIA Motors Corporation will open a plant in West Point, Georgia is being applauded by Alabama Gov. Bob Riley and officials in east Alabama.
West Point is located near the Alabama state line about 30 miles from Opelika.
Riley says the state will reap many of the financial benefits from the $1.2 billion plant, which is expected to create almost 5,500 jobs.
The news that the plant will be built just across the state line from Chambers County, Alabama comes as former mill towns in east Alabama try to replace jobs lost from closed textile plants.
