South Alabama is having a blood shortage that is hurting area hospitals.

LifeSouth Community Blood Center, which provides its blood solely to area hospitals, is 30 percent behind where they need to be, to adequately supply the hospitals.

Center officials say the shortage is the result of a flu outbreak over the past two weeks, and a need for more units in hospitals.

"We need people to come in and donate blood and help save lives. The blood that you give to LifeSouth stays in your community and your community needs you to come out now and help us," says Dothan LifeSouth Center Manager Sandra Hollis.

LifeSouth holds blood drives every day in the Wiregrass. For more information on where you can donate, call 792-9977.
