Budget Funding Crisis

Alabama Lt. Governor Lucy Baxley said Alabama is in a budget funding crisis.

Baxley made the comments in an interview Monday on a Montgomery television station.

The Democrat said she's very concerned about what legislators are going to have to do to address the state's money problems.

Alabamians may know some answers when Republican Gov. Bob Riley delivers his first State of the State speech at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday.

Riley is expected to discuss the state's finances -- including prison overcrowding, education funding and other controversial topics.

Baxley also said she's worried about Medicare and programs for the state's seniors. When asked about possible tax hikes -- Baxley said she agrees with Riley that government accountability is needed first.

But, she doubts enough wasted money will be found to offset revenue shortfalls.
